What does it really mean for incubation to be effective, and how do we know if what we’re doing is actually working?

Across the ecosystem, effectiveness is often measured through outputs – the number of startups supported, funds raised, or ventures scaled. But these indicators only tell part of the story. They don’t always capture how programmes are designed, how decisions are made, or how well incubators are responding to the realities of the founders they support.

This session brings together research and practice to explore what drives effective incubation.

Drawing on a synthesis of literature and field insights, we will examine emerging patterns around what is working, what is not, and where there is still ambiguity. These ‘signals from the field’ offer a way to step back from assumptions and better understand how effectiveness is being shaped across different contexts, particularly in resource-constrained environments across the Global South.

At the same time, this session is designed to be interactive and grounded in practice.

Through a hands-on case study exercise, participants will engage with real-world incubation scenarios and reflect on the choices that shape programme outcomes – what to prioritise, what to measure, and what to change. These discussions will connect directly back to the insights shared, helping bridge the gap between evidence and lived experience.

The session will then surface key learnings from across the field, highlighting where there is alignment, where approaches diverge, and what this means for incubators navigating complexity in their work.

We will close by translating these insights into practical shifts – small but meaningful changes that can strengthen programme design, decision-making, and approaches to measuring effectiveness.

This session is not about arriving at definitive answers. It is about building a clearer, shared understanding of what effective incubation can look like  and identifying practical ways to move closer to it.

What you’ll take away

  • A clearer framing of incubation effectiveness beyond outputs
  • 2–3 key insights to reassess your current programmes
  • At least one practical change or experiment to test within your incubation model
  • A sense of where your approach aligns – or diverges – from broader field insights
  • New perspectives from peers working across different regions and contexts

Who should join?

This session is open to all current and potential Pollinate Impact members, and is particularly relevant for:

  • Research and M&E teams
  • Partnership teams
  • CXOs and organisational leadership

If you are involved in designing, evaluating, or strengthening incubation programmes, this session offers a space to reflect on your current approach and engage with insights from across the field.
