Building Evidence for Stronger Incubators.

Pollinate Impact’s Research Pillar generates practitioner-oriented evidence to strengthen incubators and accelerators across the Global South.

For the impact incubation industry to change, it needs strong, evidence-based data and solutions to move from reactive problem-solving to strategic action. The evidence we collect is meant to help everyone involved—funders, donors, investors, policymakers, and others—adjust their actions and build a more resilient, mutually supportive industry.

The Questions We’re Asking

We believe the impact incubation ecosystem can move from fragility to resilience and even thrive through rigorous, evidence-based support and practitioner-led research. This approach transforms lived experiences into actionable data.

Financial Sustainability

Do diversified revenues lead to resilient incubators?

What does the landscape of donors and their incubation support programs look like?

Does co-creation with donors lead to healthier incubators and better incubation?

What are the power dynamics between incubators and donors, and how can this be addressed?

Limited Evidence. The literature reviews have revealed that while many incubators are exploring hybrid funding and new revenue streams beyond donor support, there remains limited evidence of what truly drives financial resilience across different contexts. We want to understand why and generate grounded, credible, and actionable insights that can strengthen the impact incubation ecosystem in the Global South.

We are conducting primary research to answer these questions and address the gaps we’ve uncovered.

Quality, Efficiency & Efficacy in Incubation

How effective is impact incubation worldwide?

What are the themes and sector-specific incubation best practices?

What can be standards for incubation?

What are incubator scaling models?

What is the actual cost of incubation and how does it vary across sectors, themes and countries?

What does the future of incubation look like and why?

Synergies Between Incubators

Do improved connections between incubators lead to trust and collaborations?

How valuable are Entrepreneur Support Organisation, incubator networks such as AfriLabs, ASSEK, ISBA, etc.?

What are the best approaches in co-incubation?

State of the Industry

What is the state of impact incubation across the Global South?

What are the policies that accelerate incubators?

How vibrant are incubation ecosystems across the Global South, and what can we learn from these diverse ecosystems?

*We will be conducting primary research to answer these questions.

Organisational Strengthening

Do improved governance, flexible funding, improved processes and systems, and better talent lead to better incubation?

What are incubator-level salary and incentive structures?

Do succession plans make for stronger incubators?

Stewards of Evidence

As we explore these important questions, our Research Advisory Council (RAC) ensures our work is rigorous and relevant. This group brings together practitioners and experts who guide us with their experience. Our Community of Practice members are equally vital, testing new ideas in real-world settings to find what works best. Together, we connect research with action, ensuring our work both informs and transforms the incubation ecosystem.

Practitioner-Focused

Turning the lived experience of impact incubators into actionable data.

Researcher-Structured

Grounded in research best practices.

Learning Mechanism

Turning research into practice.

Collective Capacity

Enabling peer learning among stakeholders across the Global South.

Incentives for Participating in Our Primary Research

Opportunity to Be Featured in a Final Report

Impact Incubators with strong, innovative models will be highlighted in the “Best Practices” section of our final report. This recognition will showcase your approach and increase your organisation’s visibility among peers, partners, and donors.

Receive a Customised Benchmarking Scorecard

Receive an anonymised, customised performance scorecard that compares your incubator’s financial sustainability with peers in similar regions or sectors. This will help you identify strengths and areas for growth.

Join Regional and Global Learning Convenings

Participants will be invited to share and learn through Pollinate Impact’s convenings and partner networks, and will receive discounted tickets to our 2026 Global Potluck in Manila. These events will highlight research insights, foster collaboration, and strengthen regional connections.

Have access to Region-and Sector-Specific Insights

Learn from peers facing similar challenges in your region or sector. Research findings will provide comparative insights to help incubators refine funding and operational strategies.

Gain Global Visibility

Participate in a first-of-its-kind, continent-wide study on the financial sustainability of impact incubators. Your involvement will position your organisation as a key contributor to shaping global understanding of incubator success.

Be Recognised in Pollinate Impact’s Channels

All participating organisations will be acknowledged through our newsletter and LinkedIn – a small but meaningful way to celebrate your contribution and commitment to strengthening the incubation ecosystem.
